Oil on canvas by Fearnleigh L Montague of Woronora Creek in New South Wales which is now part of south Sydney. Painted in 1874 and signed to the front and with other texts to the back as well. Value 50 Guineas, County Cumberland, This is the Original Sketch, No Duplicates Exist.
It has old patch marks to the back to old puncture repairs but barely noticable, it is still on the original stetcher frame and shows all the wear and tear of past framings. I have left it as is unframed as find it preferable this way.
Fearnley Montague was a colourful fellow and lived quite an eventful life through from birth in the UK in 1835 through to having dispondancy and killing his wife and himself in 1892. his life is too much for me to descipher and write here but a very good read on academia.edu. Many of his works are held in private collections around the world with only a few popping up for sale each year.
